The upcoming Labor Day weekend marks the end of the Critical Days of Summer campaign. However safety is crucial 24/7, and Airmen must not let their guard down but continue to look out for one another. The base has covered many topics over the last 15 weeks in an effort to prevent injuries and death. Topics such as drunk driving, firework safety, bicycle safety, boating safety and sport risk management have helped raise awareness to prevent mishaps.

"Airmen need to remember risk management on and off duty," said Richard Myers, 19th Airlift Wing Safety Office ground safety manager. "Operational Risk Management needs to be considered when performing even the most simplest of tasks. Only you can determine the risks you take every day and only you can reduce them."

Throughout the campaign the Air Force lost 15 people compared to 13 in 2012. According to Myers six of them came from motorcycle accidents and another five came from motor vehicle accidents. There was only one alcohol-related death compared to the eight in 2012.

Myers said to remember that as TLR enters the fall safety campaign to please consider the shift of students who are going back to school as well as the changing of road and weather conditions. Wildlife, such as deer, tend to be more active in the Jacksonville area during the fall months. Security Forces and local law enforcement will be out in force this weekend to ensure our roads remain safe from drivers under the influence.

"There is no excuse for drinking and driving," said Myers. "Please continue to look out for one another, and above all, take the time to actively consider the risks and how to reduce them before heading out."
