Prep for weather emergencies Published March 5, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Jessica Condit 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- The Airmen of the 19th Civil Engineering Squadron teach Team Little Rock members and their families how to prepare for emergency weather situations during National Weather Preparedness Week. Central Arkansas is known for its weather ups and downs and contributes significantly to the tornado count in the United States starting at the beginning of March. Being prepared for the inclement weather changes can greatly decrease the stress and alleviate panic during weather emergencies. During this week, the 19th CES emergency management team provides not only valuable information on disaster and emergency weather preparedness, but also low-cost emergency kits to use in the event of a weather emergency. Along with the emergency kits provided by the emergency management team during the designated week, National Weather Preparedness Week focuses on the important steps to take in order to be prepared for the finicky Arkansas weather. "This week is all about informing people what they can do to take a stand against severe weather," said Senior Airman Parker Smith, a 19th CES emergency management journeyman. "It means taking the appropriate actions before, during and after extreme weather strikes by knowing your risk, having a plan, building a kit and staying informed." Being prepared for weather emergencies also means taking care of your pets. Ensuring your pet is safely kenneled is important during severe weather. Having a preparedness kit for pets as well will help in the event of an emergency. A kit for pets should include items such as extra leashes, medications, vaccination records, food and water. Smith also said that staying connected to family, friends and neighbors and inspiring them to act is a key part of preparedness as well. Social media and mobile technology have made this step easier than ever. According to Team Little Rock's emergency management team, an emergency weather preparedness kit should contain at least 72 hours' worth of supplies.
