As the holiday spirit fills our homes, from Thanksgiving to New Years, these few months  become the busiest travel times of the year.

Most everyone wants to spend as much time as they can with family, but with the change in weather and the rush of the season, hazards are everywhere.

"Proper planning, preparation and continual awareness is the key to a safe and enjoyable holiday season," said Richard Myers, 19th Airlift Wing ground safety manager.

Follow this list for safe travels this holiday season:

DO:

Ensure your home is locked and have someone check on it periodically while you are away for an extended period of time.

Keep a few lights on, have your empty trashcans removed from the curb and your mail removed from the mailbox.

If you need to pull over to rest, park in a well-lit area especially in public places.

Winterize your vehicle, check the battery, brakes and heater and windshield defroster.

Watch weather reports prior to a long-distance drive or before driving in isolated areas.

Be prepared with a "survival kit" that should always remain in the car.

DON'T:

Post on social media that you will be out of town.

Identify yourself as military or federal employee.

Flash expensive jewelry or cash in public.

Drive while you are fatigued.
