Caution: Inclement Weather Ahead Published Dec. 18, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Mercedes Muro 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark., -- Imagine yourself speeding down the freeway, toward Little Rock Air Force Base. You're late for work and decide to take the short cut over the bridge to get to work on time. You reach the bridge, unaware of the terror that is about to unfold. The first two wheels glide over the ice on the top of the bridge. The back wheels slip, and the back end drags diagonally across the ice. You try to correct, but you make it worse. The car begins to spin uncontrollably across both lanes of the bridge. Endless seconds pass by, and then finally, the car stops. Brushing up on inclement weather procedures can help avoid an accident like the one described above. In addition to driving safely, inclement weather procedures also have policies for early releases and reporting procedures that will help ensure a safe commute for yourself and others during this winter season. During inclement weather, information about base procedures will be available from any or all of the following sources: base wide email, notifications from supervisor, official social media (Facebook and Twitter), the Giant Voice, AtHoc notification system, local media or by calling the Herkline at (501) 987-HERK/HERC. Here are some explanations to various reporting procedures: Early Releases: Nonmission-essential personnel are allowed early release depending on the location of their homes. · Personnel living in Beebe, Conway, southern Little Rock regions will be released immediately after the early release order is issued. · Personnel living from Cabot to Beebe and from Sherwood to Little Rock will be released 30 minutes after the release order is announced. · Personnel living on-base, Jacksonville, up to Cabot and down to Sherwood will be released one hour after the release order is announced. For more details, view the map located on the base website. Delayed Reporting: Delayed reporting applies to all civilian and military personnel. Members are not expected to report work until deplayed reporting time. Mission-Essential Reporting: Personnel deemed mission-essential by the commander will report for duty. Nonmission-essential members will remain on standby until they are notified to come in. Nonmission-essential civilian personnel will be placed on administrative leave. Mission-essential personnel with children are allowed to drop off their children at the Child Development Center or Youth Center as long as they submit a letter stating they are mission-essential in advance. Not only can following weather procedures can increase safety, but practicing more cautious driving procedures can prevent accidents. While driving, maintain a safe speed of approximately two-three car lengths between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. In the fall and winter months, bridges and overpasses can freeze over and cause black ice. Check up on the weather and driving conditions at www.arkansashighways.com/road/mapopt.htm before you begin your commute. Even though harsh temperatures may impede Little Rock AFB's mission, there may be some circumstances in which local schools are still in session. Since Arnold Drive Elementary School and Lighthouse Academy are in the Pulaski County School District, schools on base will be open depending on the school's county policy. If schools within the Pulaski School County are closed, Arnold Drive Elementary and the Lighthouse Academy will remain closed, even if Little Rock AFB is open. However, if the base is closed and Pulaski County schools are open, both on-base schools will follow base policy and be closed.
