History

On March 4, 1970, the first C-130s arrived at Little Rock Air Force Base, and within days, the entire fleet had arrived. The first C-130E Hercules, christened “The City of Jacksonville,” led a formation of nine C-130s. The aircraft assigned to the 61st Tactical Airlift Squadron 64th, Tactical Airlift Wing transferred from Sewart AFB, Tennessee. With the 64th TAW managing the C-130 operations missions and the 4442nd Combat Crew Training Wing performing the training mission, Little Rock AFB had become the home of the Herc. While units have changed over the years, the mission has remained the same for the last 45 years.

History

Personnel assigned to the 308th Missile Maintenance Squadron removed the last Titan II missile Feb. 23, 1987, from the site located one mile northwest of Judsonia, Arkansas. The deactivation of this intercontinental ballistic missile was the end of the Titan II era for Strategic Air Command. The 17 ICBMs removed from sites around Arkansas were shipped to Norton Air Force Base, California, for storage before moving to Vandenberg AFB to launch satellites into orbit. In the months after removal the ICBM sites were deactivated by purging the underground plumbing, shutting down environmental systems, and dismantling the site. The nosecone from the Judsonia Titan II now resides in Heritage Park.

History

Happy birthday to the 41st Airlift Squadron! Two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 41st Transport Squadron activated at Duncan Field, Texas, Feb. 18, 1942. The unit redesignated later in the year as the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron. During World War II, the 41st TCS participated in Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s island hopping force in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Crews ferried supplies and personnel from Australia to New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa. Since WWII, crews from the 41st Airlift Squadron have participated in the Berlin Airlift, the Vietnam War, and the Pueblo Crisis in Korea, as well as many other incidents including the Global War on Terror. Since 1942, the 41st AS has only had three years of inactivity.
