Arbor Day Foundation names Little Rock AFB Tree City USA Published April 10, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Jessica Condit 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- For 21 years in a row, Little Rock Air Force Base has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. On Feb. 17, 2014, John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation, recognized Little Rock AFB for its contributions to the environment by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. "Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Little Rock AFB make smart investments in urban forests," said Rosenow. "Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economical, social and environmental benefits." Mr. Jim Popham, a 19th Civil Engineer Squadron natural resource manager, expressed the importance of trees in the community. "We try to protect all our trees during construction projects -- especially large ones," said Popham. "A large tree has a significantly greater capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, provide more shade and habitat for wildlife. They also greatly enhance the beauty and value of property. Smaller trees can be relocated if necessary." In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, the Tree City USA Program portrays the importance of the trees on Little Rock AFB and how they play a vital role in the base community.
