June marks the beginning of the summer season, which means beach balls and basketballs are out, hikers and mountain climbers have started outdoor adventures and the NFL is preparing for football season. However, hotter days are ahead and though spring has just about prepared Arkansans for its "fun in the sun" weather, sports can be a lot less enjoyable if one is not equipped to withstand rising temperatures and insufferable humidity.

The Little Rock Air Force Base safety office wants everyone to remain aware that hydration and sunscreen, responsible drinking and precautions while playing sports are imperative.

"We can't push enough that hydration is very important," said Master Sgt. Albert Beckwith, a 19th Airlift Wing ground safety specialist. "Most people like to drink alcohol while either watching or performing sports and they forget that though those beverages are refreshing, they don't help with hydration. Drink lots of water."

Beckwith also said a common place where people sometimes forget to take safety measures during the hotter seasons is at lakes.

"People go to the lake and drink. And though that's fun, if you don't have a plan it can become a bad day," said Beckwith. "People have drowned because they drank too much and didn't have a plan and a back-up plan to the original plan."

So, this summer, while embracing the heat with road trips, cookouts, pool parties and sports, protect yourself and others by being responsible, having a plan and being careful while playing sports.
