So you think you can sing? Published June 5, 2014 By 2nd Lt. Amanda Porter 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- Little Rock Air Force Base will be kicking off Air Mobility Command's AMC Icon by hosting a base level, vocal talent show July 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Hangar 1080. AMC is searching for the 2014 AMC Icon, and it could be you. Participants must compete at the base level, and the Team Little Rock winner will continue at the major command level. Registration is open today through July 11. Register through the Thomas Community Activities Center, building 868, or call (501) 987-6720. For the base competition, contestants will compete for cash prizes: $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. The top Air Force active-duty vocalist will then compete for $2,000 in cash prizes at the major command level. The top three AMC finalists will receive cash awards of $1,000, $600 and $400 respectively. AMC Icon is loosely based around the hit TV show, American Idol, and features the vocal talents of Air Force active-duty, DOD civilians, dependents, contractors and retirees at the base level competition and active-duty members, to include Air National Guard, Reserve and en route units, at the command level competition. In 2013 1st Lt. Rachael Jarrell, 19th Logistic Readiness Squadron, won the Little Rock AFB local competition and was awarded second place in the AMC Icon Command Final. Jarrell is an avid singer and said that her interest stemed from her mother's musical influence. "It's in our blood," she said during an interview after her win. "My Poppy started courting Granny after singing Hank Williams, 'Hey Good Lookin' to her while she was waitressing at a restaurant." To enter, contestants must be 18 years or older and be active duty, a DOD civilian, dependent, contractor or retiree. Any eligible participants may win at the base level, but only active-duty members may advance to the AMC finals. This is a singing competition only. "Now in its seventh year, AMC Icon is an excellent way to showcase the extremely talented Airmen throughout the Air Mobility Command" stated Mr. Scott Black, AMC Icon Program Manager. Black also added, "In addition, AMC Icon allows installations to come together to support their favorite vocalists in a fun, relaxing environment. The overall experience also helps to instill confidence in those who compete, resulting in more productive and resilient Airmen." *The AMC Icon program also features a special category for those Air Force members not stationed on or near an AMC host base. AMC affiliate participants can enter by forwarding a music video showcasing their talents. Cash awards are available in this category as well, and the winner will also compete in the command finals.*
