Critical Days of summer: Fireworks Published June 27, 2014 By By: Airman 1st Class Mercedes Muro 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- On the Fourth of July, intense feelings of patriotism engulf America. While it is expected that celebrations will take place all over Little Rock Air Force Base and the local community, regulations are in place to ensure the safest 4th of July is held by all. Little Rock Air Force Base prohibits the sale, possession, use, and storage of fireworks, including sparklers, by anyone, including housing area residents. While some municipalities allow the sale and use of fireworks within city limits, Jacksonville, North Little Rock, Sherwood, Little Rock and Cabot prohibit the use of fireworks within city limits. If you have questions concerning your cities' policies contact your local fire department. Arkansas state law allows the sale of fireworks to people 12 years and older but the city of Sherwood requires people to be at least 16 to purchase fireworks, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Here are some helpful tips to stay safe while you're celebrating Independence Day: · Only purchase fireworks from a reliable seller. · Follow state and local laws while purchasing and using fireworks. · Have an adult present to supervise all activities. · Follow all warnings and instructions on the label--NEVER light a firework in your hand unless directed by the instructions. · Have a fire extinguisher or water nearby for emergencies. · Shoot fireworks only in open areas away from people, buildings, vehicles, vegetation and flammable material. · Don't drink alcohol when supervising or lighting fireworks. · Don't smoke around fireworks. · Don't experiment with fireworks or try to make your own. · Douse malfunctioning/dud fireworks with water--Don't try to re-light or handle them! Protect yourself, your family and Team Little rock by practicing risk management. Remember to keep these tips in mind while celebrating Independence Day. There will be free fireworks displays and celebrations across Arkansas. Examples of such free events on July 4 are Pops on the River, free admission to Clinton Library, Pinnacle Mountain Celebration, Maumelle Celebration and Sherwood's 4th of July Celebration. Fireworks displays will be over the Arkansas River beginning at 9:30 p.m., at the Jacksonville Shooting Range at 9:30 p.m. and at Sherwood Forest at 9 p.m.
