Keeping students safe during the school year Published Aug. 14, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Mercedes Muro 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- As summer rolls around, children and teens are in transition from the summer heat into the cool classrooms. Little Rock Air Force Base does its part to keep students safe at all times during the school year. "There are two schools on base," said Jeff Bardsley, 19th Security Forces chief of plans and programs. "We try to add additional presence to those areas." The 19th SFS does this by having more patrols in the area to ensure safety for the students by coordinating with patrol operations. "We put patrols out to make sure people are following the speed limit," said Tech. Sgt. Jack Way, 19th SFS police services non-commissioned officer. In addition to patrols, the base relies on other resources to help keep the students safe from base traffic. Students can walk or be dropped off at schools safely due to volunteer crossing guards. Airmen on base can volunteer to be crossroad guards during the school hours in front of Arnold Drive Elementary. "The volunteer crossing guards help ensure the safety of children and their parents as they cross Arnold Drive for school every day," said Staff Sgt. Curtis McMichael, a 19th Contracting Squadron contract specialist and coordinator for crossing guard volunteers. Parents can rest assured knowing members of Team Little Rock are doing their part to keep Airmen, families and guests safe on the streets.
