Little Rocks and Rolls into the new fiscal year Published Oct. 2, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Dolezal 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- September symbolizes the end of summer while welcoming cool autumn air. The masses flock to enjoy the outdoors, appreciating the ever-changing colors of the leaves as well as watching football. While the end of September brings the joy of fall, it also brings the close of another season with Airmen from the 19th Contracting Squadron. The small squadron of 48 military and civilian personnel worked around the clock to ensure goals and deadlines were met as they neared the end of fiscal year closeout. Members all around Team Little Rock worked feverishly to make sure that Little Rock Air Force Base was financially prepared for the upcoming year end. "About 40 percent of the staff at the 19th CONS has less than two years of experience, yet many of them are responsible for multi-million dollar contracts," said Patricia Thompson, a 19th CONS acquisition flight chief. "Yet they come in day in and day out producing excellent results on a consistent basis, which speaks volumes of the training and mentoring they receive from our senior staff members and the Air Force." The fiscal year officially ends Sept. 30 of each year. However, this year, Air Mobility Command set a target date of Sept. 25 closeout for all bases as a focal point to push construction project funding and other fallout resources. "We could not complete this task without the support of our partners," said Thompson. "The 19th Civil Engineer Squadron, 19th Comptroller Squadron and the Staff Judge Advocate office, just to name a few, played a significant role in ensuring the success of this year's end closeout." She also expressed her gratitude to the agencies involved with fiscal year 2014's closeout and said without their participation, it would not have been a success. "This has truly been a fantastic year for us in terms of funding," said Thompson. "We have received generous funding this year that far surpasses previous years. In fiscal year 2013, our team was awarded $46 million, and this year we exceeded $86 million. About 85 percent of that went right into our backyard, to small business here in Arkansas, creating unique job opportunities for Arkansans as well as boosting the local economy." Combining the runway reconstruction project and the work done by the 19th CONS more than $200 million dollars has been poured into Little Rock AFB for fiscal year 2014. Thompson expressed that improving the installation's infrastructure and the quality of life for Team Little Rock is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. "Seeing the changes in living and working conditions for our Airmen is its own reward and motivation," said Thompson.
