The Army National Guard defeated the 19th Comptroller/Contracting Squadron 83-53, Jan. 15 in what started as a close game, but quickly turned ugly.

The first half of the game was a battle with constant back-and-forth scoring.

The Army National Guard gained possession of the ball at tipoff; however, the 19th CPTS/CONS ripped down a rebound, taking it down the court scoring the first two points of the game with an easy layup.

The Army National Guard was persistent with their three-point attack, while the 19th CPTS/CONS relied on great communication for success moving the rock around. Both teams had roughly equal control of the ball for much of the half.

With 14 seconds left in the first half, the Army National Guard sunk a 3-pointer, increasing their lead to 24-38. The 19th CPTS/CONS hustled to answer back, but was unsuccessful as the buzzer sounded.

The second half started with the 19th CPTS/CONS in control of the ball. However, the never ending barrage of 3-pointers kept the 19th CPTS/CONS at bay.

In the final seconds of the game, 19th CPTS/CONS made a fast break down the court, shot the ball and made the final 3-pointer of the game. In the end, those final points were not nearly enough to come close to winning the game.

"We played well for having only five people," said Senior Airman Patrick Brault, 19th CPTS/CONS player and coach. "We held our own as good as we could against the Army."

After the game, it was clear the 19th CPTS/CONS still had some work to do, while the Army has its sights set on lofty goals.

"We're looking to win our third Championship," said Sgt. Lorenzo Hutchinson, Army National Guard player and coach. "We're playing good defense, still a little rusty, but we will get it together by the end of the season."
