Remember safety as school starts Published Aug. 21, 2015 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- It's back-to-school season which means the traffic volume on and around base will increase. Remember these safety tips when in school zones. School Bus · Wait for the bus to stop before approaching it. · Do not move around on the bus. · Check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing. · Make sure to always remain in clear view of the bus driver. · Never go behind the bus. Car · Yield to school buses. · Avoid parking or dropping students off in school bus loading zones. · Obey posted school zones speed limits; fines are doubled. · It is unlawful to use a cell phone while driving through a school zone during school hours and when students are present. · All passengers should wear a seat belt and/or an age- and size-appropriate car safety seat. Bike · Always wear a bicycle helmet. · Ride in the same direction as traffic. · Use appropriate hand signals. · Respect traffic lights and stop signs. · Wear bright color clothing to increase visibility. Walking to School · Make sure your child's school route is safe. · Be realistic about your child's pedestrian skills; small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic so consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision. · Brightly colored clothing will make a child more visible to drivers. · Remind them not to talk to or accept rides from strangers. The Rising 6 volunteers take their time to ensure cars are stopping at the crosswalks in front of Arnold Dr. Elementary School. If you would like to volunteer please contact Staff Sgt. Curtis McMichael, the Rising 6 Crossing Guard POC. The Harris Rd. gate will be open Monday through Friday from 6 - 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 5 p.m.
