Mission Readiness Begins at Home Through MFRC Support

Mission readiness doesn’t begin on the flightline; it begins at home. Behind every successful flight, deployment and training is a network of support designed to ensure Airmen and their families are prepared for whatever the mission demands.

The Military & Family Readiness Center (MFRC) plays a key role in that support system. While many recognize the office’s name, fewer fully understand the depth of resources and impact the MFRC provides across the installation.

“We are the social services of the Air Force. We have programs and services not only for the military members, but their families as well,” said Wayne Ojala, Military and Family Readiness Center flight chief.

When things at home are steady, it helps Airmen stay focused on the responsibilities in front of them. That connection between home life and job performance is why family readiness remains a priority across the force.

“When we send people to a forward location and things aren't squared away at home, it causes them to not be able to focus on what they're doing,” said Ojala.

By helping families prepare for deployments, relocations and life transitions, the MFRC aims to directly strengthen the operational effectiveness of the base.

Despite its wide range of resources, many Airmen associate the MFRC with newcomer briefings or pre-deployment checklists.

“One of the most common things I hear is that members didn’t know we offered something,” said Ojala. “We do an open house every year to encourage supervisors to bring their young Airmen in and encourage married members to bring their spouses to see what we have to offer.”

The center provides support at every career stage and life circumstance, not just during major milestones. From financial counseling to spouse career assistance, the MFRC serves as a resource members can use before challenges arise, not only in response to them.

“Our youngest generation is coming to report to their first base, and some haven't really ever lived on their own, paid for insurance or wrapped their heads around taxes,” said Ojala. “Finance touches everybody, so we have accredited financial counselors and a team dedicated to helping members whenever they need it.”

The MFRC provides a safe, professional environment where Airmen and families can seek guidance without fear of judgment.

“We definitely have an open door policy,” said Ojala. “If anybody shows up and asks what we do, we're going to take them on a tour and talk about what we have to offer. That's just part of our DNA and part of our job.”

At its core, the MFRC exists to ensure no Airman or family member has to navigate military life alone. From the first assignment to final out processing, its programs are designed to keep members supported, informed and prepared for every transition and challenge along the way.

The team’s dedication garnered them the 2025 Air Force A1 Annual Award for Force Support Capabilities, an honor that highlights superior performance in delivering readiness enhancing services and programs across the base. This award is a testament to the MFRC’s commitment to community, resilience, and mission readiness.
