Flu season fast approaching Published Sept. 25, 2008 By the 314th Medical Group 314th MDG LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- The cold and flu season will soon be among us. The flu is caused by the influenza virus and the best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated. The flu vaccine protects against the year's three most prevalent flu strains, but people who are vaccinated can still catch the flu from strains that are not covered by the vaccine. Some common symptoms associated with the flu include fever, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle and body aches, extreme tiredness, stomach symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry cough and sore throat. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the following are good habits to help prevent the flu and other respiratory viruses: · Avoid close contact with an infected person · Stay home when you are sick · Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze · Wash your hands · Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth · Practice good health habits · Get an adequate amount of sleep, stay active, eat healthy and drink plenty of fluids. The FluMist will be available at the Thomas Community Activities Center on the following dates: · Sept. 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. · Oct. 2 to 3 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. · Oct. 6 from 7 a.m. to 4 pm. · Oct. 9 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on prevention, visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at www.cdc.gov.
