Airman places second in Race for the Cure 5K Published Nov. 4, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Rochelle Clace 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- An Airman from Little Rock Air Force Base took second place from a field of more than 45,000 runners in the Susan G. Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure 5K in downtown Little Rock. Oct. 17. First Lt. Vivien Miller, 19th Medical Group bioenvironmental engineer, said she was happy with her finish and was motivated to run in the race by women in her flight. "All the women in my flight were going to [run in the race], so I decided to do it too," said Lieutenant Miller. "One of the girls here made a team, and it was neat that we were all able to do it together." According to the former Air Force Academy cross country and track team member, it's important for Airmen to find creative ways to stay fit, while supporting a good cause at the same time. "It gives you more motivation to stay fit, because staying fit is very important in the Air Force," she said. "When you can do things for a good cause it makes it even more valuable. It adds that extra dimension of value to what you're doing." She said participating in physical activities as a team in the Air Force is important because it motivates Airmen to achieve their physical training goals of being fit to fight. "Not everybody's a runner, and a lot of people wouldn't have that motivation to do it if there wasn't a team concept," she said. "It makes it more fun and makes everyone more accountable." Lieutenant Miller wants to create a marathon training group on base. "If anyone is interested in forming a marathon or 13.1 marathon training group, please join us for a meeting at the [Health and Wellness Center] at 11 a.m. Nov. 17," she said. "The Little Rock Marathon is on the horizon and December would be the perfect time to get started." For individuals who can't make the meeting but are still interested in the marathon training group, call Lieutenant Miller at 987-7344 or e-mail at Vivien.miller@littlerock.af.mil.
