Operation 40 proof Published Nov. 20, 2009 LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- Nov. 26 kicks off the Operation 40 Proof campaign, representing the 40-day period beginning the week of Thanksgiving and lasting through New Year's Day. It's the second riskiest time of the year for Air Force members. Traditionally, the period from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day is spent enjoying the holiday season and spending time with family and friends. Unfortunately, it's proven to be a period with increased potential for serious mishaps. During last year's Operation 40 Proof, Team Little Rock had 10 lost-time and 53 minor mishaps. Seven of the minor mishaps involved private motor vehicles. "Particular emphasis needs to be directed to the potential for mishaps involving alcohol. Commanders and supervisors need to stress the importance of responsible alcohol use during this period," said Col. Michael Zick, 19th Airlift Wing vice commander. A very sad statistic from the National Safety Council reveals that 52 percent of the fatal traffic mishaps involve at least one intoxicated driver and that more than two-thirds of those killed are themselves intoxicated. "If someone knows they're going to drink at a function or party, they should make advanced plans for getting home. Airmen need to plan ahead and think about what they will do if they decide to drink," said Col. Greg Otey, 19th Airlift Wing commander. "Airmen should use personal risk management to help plan their activities, identify risks and find ways to reduce those risks, such as using the designated driver program, share-a-ride program and other means to avoid driving after drinking which have proved to be effective. Plan ahead, servicemembers are too valuable of a resource to be lost!" Some additional considerations involve remembering to always wear a seatbelt and only use a hand's free device with a cell phone while driving. The safety office recommends not using a phone at all. The best defense against an alcohol-related incident is a good plan; if someone is a designated driver, use defensive driving techniques.
