Skillful speaking

Col. Robert Watson, 314th Airlift Wing vice commander, addresses the Toastmaster's Speechcraft Seminar on public speaking at the conference center Jan. 9. The Air Force Chief of Staff has designated all Airmen as communicator’s and Toastmasters teaches those skills to today's force. “Having good communication skills are vital,” said Master Sgt. Nichole Reynolds, the base Toastmasters’ out-going president. “They also help you improve your self-concept and self-esteem. Sergeant Reynolds said speaking skills translate into more than just conquering stage fright. “It helps with leadership,” she said. “You will benefit from it in other aspects of your military career.” Though most people freeze in fear of giving briefings and speeches, the club offers a forum for speakers of all experience levels to grow. “The only way you are going to overcome your fear is to actually do it,” Sergeant Reynolds said. “Toastmasters provides a friendly and supportive environment. It’s a good place to start.” The club meets 11 a.m.-noon Wednesdays in the 314th Medical Group conference room.
