SEVERE WEATHER INFORMATION

Understanding the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning is crucial for taking appropriate safety measures. Additionally, did you know that tornado siren activation protocols are different for Pulaski County and Little Rock Air Force Base?  See attached and below for more info. For Little Rock Air Force Base Weather questions call 501-987-6152/6444 or email: 19oss.osw.info@us.af.mil.

Little Rock Air Force Base:

  • Sirens are activated when a tornado is expected to occur or is currently occurring within a five-mile radius of the center of the airfield. This focused approach is intended to avoid unnecessary panic and loss of productivity on the base when a tornado is not a direct threat.
  • In addition to the "Giant Voice" siren system, personnel on base are notified through the AtHoc system, which sends messages to computers and phones.

Pulaski County:

  • The county's sirens are activated when a tornado touches down in or is expected to occur within the county’s borders.
  • This means that even if a tornado is in a distant part of the county, the sirens will sound for entire area. This integrated system doesn’t pinpoint specific regions within the county, which can lead to alerts in areas not in direct path of the storm.
