Add layers while lacing up for winter sports Published Dec. 18, 2014 By Senior Airman Regina Agoha 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark., -- For those who love outdoor sports, nothing can keep them from the thrill of the game, not the scorching sun, nor an icy breeze. But whether you're a winter sports expert or a newbie, the key to enjoying the sport of your choice, while remaining healthy, is dressing sufficiently. The goal for proper winter sports attire is to dress in lightweight, synthetic layers. As your body begins to warm and you sweat, it will be easy to remove layers to fit your comfort level. According to resources from the Department of Defense's Winter Safety Campaign website: Always bring a hat and gloves to your sporting events, regardless of the weather or your activity level. As with the rest of your clothing, synthetic materials work best for protecting you against the extremes, and they don't itch. Look for fleece hats made with wind stopper fabric, gloves and mittens layered with Gore-Tex and fleece, and socks made of synthetic, moisture-wicking materials. Cotton is a poor choice for insulation because it absorbs moisture and loses any insulating value when it gets wet. Hence, moisture-wicking synthetics, which move moisture away from the skin and stay light, are the best choice for active winter sports like skiing. Not only do synthetic fabrics wick moisture away from the skin, they dry quickly and help keep the wearer warm in the process. Though there are no options for skiing in Arkansas, these tips are relevant for any winter activity. Protecting yourself from freezing temperatures will also help with prevention from illnesses like the common cold, flu and pneumonia. Let's face it, if you're sick, you'll be forced to sit on the sideline or watch your favorite sports on the T.V., rather than being in the action. So this winter season, as you're lacing up your cleats, boots or skates, remember to throw an extra layer on under your jersey, and guard you head and ears with a synthetic hat. Grab some gloves, and then you should be good to go out and enjoy the games that no weather can stop you from playing.
