Each March, Airmen worldwide observe National Nutrition Month.

The campaign is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating as well as promoting physical activity.

The Little Rock Air Force Base Health and Wellness Center is a great local resource for nutrition and fitness information.

The theme for 2015 is "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle," which encourages Airmen and families to adopt eating plans that focus on consuming fewer calories and making wiser food choices.

Along with exercising, proper nutrition can help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health.

Jill Hinsley, a 19th Medical Group registered dietician, emphasizes the importance of nutrition.

"Eating right is just as important, if not more, than working out. The right nutrition will make fitness goals much more attainable," she said.

The HAWC offers several classes that can help Little Rock Airmen and families become and stay healthy.

The center's "Be Well" class improves fitness performance and provides nutrition tips each Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The team also has a monthly "Heart Healthy" class that focuses on ways to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

A variety of workout classes are offered at the base fitness center as well. Vital 90, Zumba, spin and yoga/pilates classes are just some of the popular options.

There is also 24/7 gym access for registered Common Access Card holders and the TRX Expeditionary Force Trainer at the Warfit Pavilion.

The HAWC encourages Airmen and leaders to utilize their variety of services and knowledge.

"We've recently given briefings at different squadrons about personalized nutrition and fitness topics," said Hinsley.

Though March highlights the importance of nutrition, the HAWC promotes eating right year-round. The team collaborated with the dining facility to ensure there are healthy options available on base.

"Overall, people feel better when they eat real food," said Hinsley.

You can contact the HAWC at (501) 987-7288 to find the locations and times of nearby farmers markets that offer locally grown and farm-raised food options.
