Little Rock Air Force Base has seen a dip in sexual assaults and the 2005 to 2006 fiscal years mark the lowest two-year period for sexual assault in the last 10 years.

There have traditionally been spikes in sexual assault here in the months of May, August, and November -- the highest risk month of the year. Although November is coming to a close, Mr. Frank Cope, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator says that sexual assault is an "equal opportunity time of year crime".

Other risk factors for sexual assault include alcohol.

"Ninety-nine percent of sexual assaults in the last 10 years have involved alcohol use by the offender, victim or both," he said.

He also emphasizes that we must remain vigilant.

"One in three females in the military will be a victim of sexual assault," Mr. Cope said.

According to FBI statistics, in 50 percent of civilian rapes, the offender was a former boyfriend or husband. In the other 50 percent, the offender was most likely someone the victim knew, a friend or acquaintance.

Sexual Assault Prevention Safety Tips

- Go out in groups and never leave a friend behind.

- Have a sober wingman even if you're walking or taking a cab.

- If your friend is going home or to another location with an acquaintance take his number and his picture with your camera phone. He will know he is being held accountable and that you'll follow up on your friend's safety.

Men

- Legally, a drunk female cannot give consent to sex. Do not leave yourself or your wingman open for later questions of consent.

- You are the first line of defense for sexual assault. Don't be a passive bystander if you see another male being aggressive.
